The US command is dispatching an elite marine unit to the Middle East. This was reported by The Telegraph newspaper.
According to the publication, a rapid reaction group consisting of 2.5 thousand marines will be deployed to the Middle East. This unit is adapted to carry out amphibious, ground, and aviation operations.
The expeditionary corps includes a ground unit with infantry, armored vehicles, and artillery, an aviation group consisting of helicopters and fighter jets, as well as logistics and command units.
According to the newspaper, the US has not disclosed the exact purpose of this mission. However, the unit may be tasked with restoring control over the Strait of Hormuz. This strait is considered the only vital route for entering the Persian Gulf.
This corps also has experience in countering drones. It includes escort ships equipped with electronic warfare assets.
According to a former high-ranking Pentagon official in an interview with The New York Times, the deployment of this corps could give the US the ability to conduct raids on islands near the Strait of Hormuz.
