Following the completion of reconstruction and restoration work on the historic barracks built in 1826–1828, the complex was reopened for use in 2023. During the full restoration process, the building's historical appearance and original construction materials were preserved to the maximum extent possible. Today, Rami Library has a 36,000 m² indoor area and a seating capacity of 4,200, making it one of Turkey's largest information centers. Alongside digital, youth, and adult libraries, various specialized departments operate successfully within the complex.
Ecological solutions hold a central place in the library's design. With a 51,000-square-meter green area, the complex holds the title of the library with «the largest indoor landscape area in Europe». The 696 trees, 99,000 bushes, biological pond, and reed beds in the area support urban biodiversity and serve to improve the local microclimate. Rainwater collected from the building's expansive roof surfaces is recycled and directed toward landscape irrigation and toilets. Solar panels, low-energy equipment, LED lighting, and smart sensors are used to reduce energy consumption. Furthermore, waste is sorted at the source, the use of single-use plastics is restricted, and internal workflows are fully digitized.
Promoting the concept of a «living library», Rami Library hosts seminars and environmental education programs aimed at increasing climate literacy. The complex's Special Resources Center creates equal opportunities for users with diverse needs. Additionally, in the complex's «Şifahane» (restoration) department, rare manuscripts and printed sources are restored and preserved to be handed down to future generations. The library operates on a 24/7 basis and also serves as a safe assembly point for the population during natural disasters.
Thanks to these multifaceted initiatives, Rami Library became the first library in Turkey to win the «Biosphere Sustainable Museum Certificate», «Zero Waste Certificate», and «Green Energy Certificate». Having welcomed over 8.2 million visitors since its opening in 2023, the complex's receipt of this international award has once again proven that the future of modern libraries lies not only in books, but in harmony with humans and the environment.
