Germany's influential Die Welt publication published an article about Alisher Usmanov's important legal victory achieved in a court case against the European Union.
According to the publication, the European Union relied on certain unverified information when imposing sanctions against Usmanov in 2022. In particular, he was portrayed as Vladimir Putin's trusted representative. However, the validity of these claims was not proven in the German court.
Usmanov applied to the court demanding that the European Union stop disseminating unfounded information about him. But according to Die Welt information, certain state bodies of Germany obstructed the official delivery of the claim to the Council of the European Union for nearly 3 years.
On October 21, 2026, the German Federal Supreme Court found such actions illegal and noted that Usmanov's right to judicial protection was violated. It is noted that although Usmanov was removed from the European Union's sanctions list on September 22, certain accusations made against him still remain on official websites.
According to the author of Die Welt, this decision could become an important legal precedent for thousands of individuals who have fallen under European Union sanctions. Now they may also have the opportunity to contest unfounded accusations disseminated against them in national courts.
