Turkey: Underwater Destinations Rich in Wonders

Today, many tourists are not limited to just relaxing by the sea, but strive to discover new places and explore the underwater world. According to market analysis regarding diving tourism, more than 65 percent of those who prefer active recreation have expressed interest in water activities, including scuba diving. This shows that the demand for active and meaningful adventures during summer holidays is growing.

Located at the crossroads of East and West and surrounded by seas on three sides, Turkey also attracts attention with its diving destinations in the Mediterranean and Aegean regions. These areas provide divers of various levels with the opportunity to see the underwater world up close and explore marine nature.

The diving season in Turkey is relatively long. The variety of diving areas helps to observe the magical underwater world from different angles. Diving enthusiasts can dive into the depths of the sea from a boat, see shipwrecks preserving traces of history, and move along underwater caves and gorges. The country also has diving centers and training courses with experienced specialists.

The Best Diving Spots on the Turkish Riviera

When it comes to scuba diving in Turkey, Antalya, one of the main centers of the Turkish Riviera, is mentioned as the most popular underwater destination in the country. Among them, the coast of Kaş holds a special place, being included among the top ten diving spots in the world.

Stretching from Kaş to Kalkan and Kemer, this region attracts divers with its clear waters, excellent underwater visibility, and rich marine ecosystem. Marine life here is so vibrant that many sea creatures such as loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta), black groupers, and Mediterranean moray eels can be seen.

Kaş also holds special significance in Turkey as an archaeological diving destination. In the underwater areas near Besmi Island, historical finds such as ancient amphorae, anchors, and ceramic jars can be encountered.

In addition, the remains of a Dakota airplane intentionally sunk to create an artificial reef are one of the notable features of the region. Today, it has become an interesting destination for underwater photographers due to the pale-colored algae covering it.

Another remarkable area is the Canyon, famous for its tunnel-like cave. This cave serves as a habitat for various marine creatures. Furthermore, the historical Dimitri shipwreck located in the depths of the Canyon is also of interest to divers.

Diving Destinations in the Aegean Sea

The Aegean coast is also one of the important regions for diving, with numerous diving spots stretching from north to south. Especially the pristine waters, sheltered bays, and excellent underwater visibility around Muğla, Marmaris, Fethiye, Datça, and Bodrum contribute to the development of diving tourism.

Orak Island in Bodrum, Delikli Cave, Poyraz Bay, as well as the Big and Small underwater reefs are among the important areas for diving. These spots are significant for their marine life diversity, transparent waters, and suitable routes for divers of various levels.

The submerged Airbus A300 airplane in the Kuşadası district of Aydın province stands out as a unique artificial reef. This object generates interest from the perspective of studying the underwater environment and observing the role of artificial reefs in the marine ecosystem.

Diving into the Depths of History

Çanakkale also holds historical significance due to the Gallipoli Campaign during World War I. Therefore, diving routes associated with shipwrecks occupy a special place in this region. The Gallipoli Peninsula is included in the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List and is evaluated as one of the important historical sites preserved from the First World War.

At the 17 diving points in the area, shipwrecks such as SS Milo, Lundy, and HMS Louis can be encountered. These underwater monuments serve as a reminder of the historical layers of the Gallipoli front. In this regard, diving in Çanakkale is significant not only as an active holiday, but also as an experience connected with history.
