Fines increased in Uzbekistan for early marriages and religious marriage ceremonies without civil registration

The President signed a law providing for the tightening of penalties for violating legislation on the marriage age and the procedure for concluding marriages. The new norms entered into force on October 14.

Fines are now set as follows:

For entering into actual marital relations with a minor — from 4.4 million UZS to 6.6 million UZS. Previously, the fine was from 2.2 million UZS to 4.4 million UZS.

For giving a minor in marriage before reaching the legal marriage age, parents or persons replacing them will be fined from 8.8 million UZS to 11 million UZS. Previously, this amount ranged from 3.08 million UZS to 6.6 million UZS.

For conducting a religious marriage ceremony without state registration of the marriage, a fine of 13.2 million UZS to 22 million UZS is established. This applies, among other things, to cases where a minor participates in the ceremony. Previously, the fine was from 6.6 million UZS to 13.2 million UZS.

It is also stipulated that persons who report illegal marriages will be rewarded with up to 15 percent of the collected fine, provided that certain conditions are met.
